One AirPod Not Working? 8 Fixes Before You Buy a Replacement
When one earbud goes silent, won't charge, or drops out, it's usually not a dead set — it's one of eight simple issues. Work through these in order; most take under 5 minutes.

Quick Reference: All 8 Fixes at a Glance
| Fix # | What to Try | Difficulty | Success Rate |
|---|---|---|---|

| #2 | Center the audio balance slider | Easy | 32% |
| #3 | Clean the silent AirPod's speaker mesh | Easy | 26% |

| #7 | Update AirPods firmware | Easy | 10% |
| #8 | Test the earbud on another device | Easy | 5% |
Combined, these eight steps resolve roughly 80% of single-AirPod problems. If yours is in the other 20%, the hardware section below shows the cheapest fix.
1Identify Which AirPod Failed — and the Exact Symptom
Before you fix anything, pin down the problem. "One AirPod not working" can mean three different things, and each points to a different set of fixes:
- No sound from one side (it still connects) → usually balance settings or a clogged speaker mesh (Fixes 2–3).
- Won't charge — one earbud shows no charge or dies fast → contacts and case fit (Fixes 4–5).
- Won't connect / drops out → a pairing or firmware glitch (Fixes 5–7).
If it's specifically the left or right earbud, we have dedicated step-by-steps for each: see Left AirPod Not Working and Right AirPod Not Working.
2Center the Audio Balance Slider
The most common reason one AirPod seems dead is that your device's audio balance is pushed to one side — so sound only plays from the other earbud. It takes 20 seconds to rule out.
iPhone / iPad
- Open Settings → Accessibility
- Tap Audio/Visual
- Make sure the Balance slider sits dead center (not pushed left or right)
Mac
- Apple menu → System Settings → Accessibility → Audio
- Check the Balance slider is centered
3Clean the Silent AirPod's Speaker Mesh
Earwax and lint build up on the tiny speaker grille and muffle or block sound entirely. This is the second most common cause of a "dead" earbud.
- Remove the affected AirPod from the case
- Gently brush the speaker mesh with a dry soft-bristled brush or clean toothbrush
- Brush in one direction — don't scrub
- For stubborn debris, use a wooden toothpick or plastic tweezers under good light
- Let it air-dry 5 minutes before reinserting
4Re-seat Both AirPods and Charge for 15 Minutes
If one earbud is simply out of battery — or isn't seating properly in the case — it can look completely dead. Reset the contact and give it a charge.
- Wipe the charging contacts inside the case with a dry cotton swab (they should be shiny gold)
- Wipe the two gold pins on the bottom of the earbud
- Seat both AirPods firmly — you should feel them click into place
- Close the lid and charge for at least 15 minutes
- Open the case near your phone and check the battery readout for both earbuds
5Factory Reset Your AirPods
A reset clears corrupted pairing data that can knock one earbud offline. Works for AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and all generations.
- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 5 seconds, then open it
- On your device: Settings → Bluetooth → your AirPods → Forget This Device
- With the lid open, hold the setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds
- Release when the light flashes amber, then white
- Hold the open case next to your phone to re-pair
6Forget and Re-pair via Bluetooth
If a full reset feels like overkill, a fresh Bluetooth pairing often fixes a one-sided connection glitch on its own.
- Settings → Bluetooth, tap the ⓘ next to your AirPods
- Choose Forget This Device and confirm
- Hold your open case nearby and follow the setup prompt to reconnect
7Update AirPods Firmware
Outdated firmware causes one-earbud bugs that Apple quietly patches. Firmware updates install automatically — you just have to create the right conditions.
- Put the AirPods in the case and connect the case to power
- Keep the case near your iPhone, which must be on Wi-Fi
- Leave it for ~15 minutes — the update applies silently
- Check the version under Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ → About → Firmware Version
8Test the Earbud on Another Device
This is the definitive test. It tells you whether the problem is your phone or the AirPod itself.
- Works on another device → the issue is your original phone's software/settings. Re-run Fixes 2, 5, and 6 there.
- Still dead everywhere → it's a hardware fault in that earbud. The section below has the fix.
When It's a Hardware Issue: What to Do
If the earbud fails on every device after all eight steps, the hardware is the problem. Usually one of these:
- Blown speaker (no sound even after cleaning)
- Dead battery (won't hold or take a charge)
- Bluetooth antenna damage (won't pair)
- Water or impact damage

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use just one AirPod while I wait for a replacement?
- Yes. A single AirPod works fine on its own for calls and audio — just take the working one out of the case and it connects normally.
- Will a replacement AirPod sync with my existing one?
- Yes. Once you reset the pair and add the replacement, both earbuds sync as a normal set. Match the same model and generation for best results.
- How do I know if it's software or hardware?
- Fix #8 is the tell: if the earbud also fails on a second device, it's hardware and needs replacing.
- Why does one AirPod stop working after a year or two?
- The most common culprit is battery wear — the tiny cells degrade with charge cycles, so one earbud dies faster than the other. A replacement earbud restores full runtime.
- Is it cheaper to replace one AirPod or buy a new set?
- Replacing the single earbud is far cheaper — typically up to 50% less than a full new set, since you keep the case and working side.
